80% of LPG Shops Shut Down in Lahore after Crackdown on price hike
LAHORE: In result of secer crackdown, 80% of LPG shops in Lahore have been closed, responding to the widespread sale of LPG at inflated prices.
The LPG price, officially set at Rs 234 per kg by Ogra, has skyrocketed to Rs 320 per kg in various areas, creating distress among domestic consumers, rickshaw drivers, and hotel owners due to the natural gas shutdown.
Irfan Khokhar, Chairman of the LPG Industries Association, urged the government to establish a code of conduct for LPG shops, bringing illegal operations under the law to enable dignified business practices for shopkeepers. He highlighted the dangers of sub-standard cylinders, calling for strict enforcement of safety standards and the creation of SOPs for LPG businesses.
Khokhar emphasized the need for a government-led code of conduct prioritizing safety, expressing full support for such measures. He pointed out the proliferation of non-standard cylinders sold at hardware shops and the closure of numerous sub-standard cylinder factories in Gujranwala.
The crackdown underscores the urgent need for regulation and safety measures in the LPG industry, aiming to protect consumers and legitimate businesses alike.
