Amnesty International urges Pakistan to keep internet service on during elections
ISLAMABAD, Feb 07: Amnesty International, alongside various human rights organizations, has raised a crucial demand for the assurance of uninterrupted internet access during the upcoming elections.
This call to action stems from the Keep It Open coalition, comprising over 300 human rights organizations from 105 nations, collectively advocating for the fundamental right to access the internet.
Media reports indicate that Amnesty International, in conjunction with other human rights bodies, has issued a letter addressed to the Caretaker Prime Minister, Chief Election Commissioner, and Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Major General Retired Hafeezur Rehman. The letter emphasizes the necessity of ensuring internet access and digital communication platforms for all citizens across the country during the electoral process, including vital national events. This access is deemed imperative, especially during the general elections, to uphold democratic principles.
