ANP makes history with inclusion of transgender doctor in central cabinet
PESHAWAR, May 08: The Awami National Party (ANP) has appointed Dr. Mehrib Mueiza Awan as Secretary for Transgender Rights in its central cabinet. This marks the first time a transgender person has been included in a major political party's central cabinet in Pakistan's history.
The announcement came during a meeting at the Bacha Khan Center, where the ANP finalized the formation of its entire cabinet through consensus. Dr. Awan's appointment signifies the party's commitment to inclusivity and recognition of transgender rights.
Dr. Awan is a highly qualified public health professional with a Master's degree from the University of Washington and an MBBS from Khyber Medical University. Beyond her medical expertise, she brings a wealth of experience in advocating for transgender rights. Dr. Awan currently serves as the Director of Policy and Gender at the Gender Interactive Alliance and has a history of working with the World Bank and various hospitals.
