Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa calls for end to Kalashnikov culture in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Jan 17 : In a recent hearing presided over by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, the Chief Justice emphasized the need to eliminate the prevailing Kalashnikov culture in Pakistan. The three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, expressed concern over a case involving the theft of two Kalashnikovs, two pistols, and other valuables.
During the proceedings, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa raised questions about the police's handling of the case, noting that they failed to request the license from the person whose house the weapons were stolen. The owner of the stolen arms confessed to the crime, highlighting a lack of due diligence in the investigation.
Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa underscored the detrimental impact of the Kalashnikov culture on Pakistan, stating that the proliferation of weapons, drugs, and Kalashnikovs has had destructive consequences for the nation. He criticized the practice of individuals, often wearing black glasses, carrying Kalashnikovs in large cars, asserting that such behavior is uncommon globally.
Directing his attention to the petitioner, the Chief Justice questioned the source of the Kalashnikov and why action should not be taken against the possessor when the Inspector General is providing documentation for such weapons. He urged the Interior Secretary to retrieve all Kalashnikovs and their licenses, expressing concern about the alarming sight of people brandishing weapons in schools and markets. The Chief Justice emphasized that those who carry weapons with the intent to intimidate should stay at home.
Expressing displeasure with the presence of guards wielding Kalashnikovs outside homes in Islamabad, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa remarked on the prevalence of individuals with black glasses carrying such firearms. He also criticized the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police for their failure to inquire about the license of the stolen arms.
Highlighting the illegality of possessing arms without a license, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa issued notices to the Home Secretary, all provincial Home Secretaries, and Inspectors General of Police. The Attorney General also received notices to forward copies of the decree to the Provincial Advocate Generals.
