China Reaffirms Support for Pakistan Amid Rising Tensions with India Over Pahalgam Incident

Beijing urges restraint and calls for dialogue between Islamabad and New Delhi
In the wake of the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, China has expressed unwavering support for Pakistan. The incident, which occurred on April 22, 2025, has exacerbated tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
China’s Position on the Pahalgam Attack
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi issued a statement emphasizing Beijing’s understanding of Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns. He reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests. Wang also voiced China’s support for a fair and timely investigation into the attacks. Furthermore, he urged both Pakistan and India to exercise restraint, engage in dialogue, and work together to de-escalate tensions and promote stability in the region.
Pakistan’s Response to Indian Allegations
Following the Pahalgam incident, India accused Pakistan without providing evidence, leading to the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the implementation of various countermeasures. In retaliation, Pakistan suspended all trade with India, closed its airspace to Indian airlines, and declared Indian diplomats in Islamabad undesirable. Pakistan has also offered to support an impartial international investigation and initiated communication with foreign ministers worldwide to brief them on the situation.
China’s Ongoing Support for Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Efforts
China has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts. In November 2024, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized China’s firm commitment to protecting its citizens and institutions abroad. He stated that China and Pakistan have the resolve and capability to thwart any attempts to harm their bilateral relationship and ensure that terrorists will face justice. Lin also highlighted the deep-rooted “iron-clad friendship” between the two nations and reiterated China’s support for Pakistan’s socio-economic development and cooperation in various fields.
As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to rise following the Pahalgam incident, China’s support for Pakistan underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region. Beijing’s call for restraint and dialogue reflects its longstanding interest in regional stability and its strategic partnership with Islamabad. The international community watches closely as both nations navigate this critical juncture in their bilateral relations
