LAHORE, Feb 02: As the 9th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) gears up for its February 17 kickoff in Lahore, franchises express growing apprehension due to sluggish preparations, with just two weeks remaining until the tournament's commencement.
The slow pace of preparations is attributed to instability within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), affecting the planned ticket sale strategy. The looming question of Ali Zafar's anthem performance adds to the uncertainty surrounding the yet-to-be-finalized opening ceremony, even though recent developments confirm the sealing of a broadcast deal.
Surprisingly, an advertising campaign has been notably absent, complicating matters for franchises seeking sponsorship deals. Jersey unveilings have yet to occur, and after government restrictions on surrogate advertising, teams are left with limited options for promotional activities.
The leadership dynamics for PSL 9 remain unclear, with uncertainty over whether PSL Director Soheb Shaikh, League Commissioner Naila Bhatti, or COO Salman Naseer will take charge. Sources suggest deliberate delays in the process under the watch of Zaka Ashraf's PCB officials, who anticipated Najam Sethi's return as chairman, which did not materialize.
Prime Minister nominee Mohsin Naqvi is slated for the Governing Board, with an interim chairman and Election Commissioner Shah Khawar overseeing the selection of the new chief on February 6. Expectations are high for increased efficiency once responsibilities are handed over to the elected chairman.
The inauguration ceremony is anticipated to be more modest this year, with a budget set at Rs 20 crore, down from last year's Rs 33 crore. Despite opposition from Multan Sultans, Ali Zafar is likely to sing the national anthem, contingent on resolving concerns related to past harassment incidents. Ticketing preparations are underway, although concerns persist about the overall pace and readiness.
Franchise officials acknowledge the notably slow pace of PSL 9, expressing worries that major international players may not participate this time.
