Contempt of Court Charges Filed Against Senate Chairman and Members Over Election Postponement Resolution
Islamabad, An application for contempt of court proceedings has been filed against the Senate Chairman and members following the passage of a resolution to postpone elections. The resolution, approved in the Senate, has triggered legal action, with lawyer Ishtiaq Ahmed petitioning the Supreme Court, asserting that the resolution falls within the realm of contempt of court. Ahmed contends that passing a resolution against the constitution warrants action against the Senate leadership.
Meanwhile, Senator Mushtaq Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami submitted a counter-resolution to the Senate Secretariat opposing the decision to delay the elections. Mushtaq Ahmed denounced the resolution as unconstitutional, emphasizing that the responsibility of holding elections lies with the caretaker government and the Election Commission, as per the Supreme Court's directive.
In his resolution, Senator Mushtaq Ahmed criticized the postponement of the February 8 election, deeming it unconstitutional under the pretext of law and order concerns and adverse weather conditions. He condemned the move, expressing concerns that it benefits undemocratic forces attempting to evade the electoral process. The resolution further highlights the potential detrimental effects on the country's politics, democracy, constitutionalism, unity, and integrity.
