Dates from Pakistan Reach 14 Countries, Production Set to Increase with New Methods: AARI
FAISALABAD, (NH): Pakistan is actively exporting dates to several countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Greece, Denmark, India, Germany, Nepal, Spain, Sri Lanka, the USA, France, and the UK. Experts believe that by adopting modern production technologies, the country can not only meet domestic demand but also increase exports, earning valuable foreign exchange.
According to specialists at the Date Palm Research Institute, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) Faisalabad, date cultivation in Punjab has now expanded to 90,000 hectares. The region produces an annual yield of 570,000 to 630,000 tons, with an average production of 2.5 to 3 maunds (100 to 120 kg) per tree.
They further explained that the ideal climate for date cultivation requires hot, dry weather with high temperatures and low humidity. Dates can also tolerate saline soil conditions, making them versatile for various regions. Rich in nutrients, dates contain magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and other minerals, along with vitamins A, B, C, and proteins. They also consist of 70-75% starch, which helps in blood cell regeneration and enhances overall health.
The experts advised farmers to plant date trees 20 to 25 feet apart, with an optimal density of 90 to 110 trees per acre. They encouraged farmers to seek further guidance from agricultural experts to maximize yield and quality.
