ECP extends nomination deadline for General Elections 2024

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Friday has extended the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the upcoming general elections. Candidates now have until December 24 to file their paperwork, two days beyond the initial window of December 20th to 22nd.

The decision comes after appeals from major parties like the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam F (JUI-F), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). These parties cited logistical challenges and the need for additional time to finalize candidate selection and secure required paperwork as reasons for requesting an extension.

The PML-N, in particular, argued that February elections warrant additional time for candidates to gather documents and obtain clearances. JUI-F, on the other hand, proposed reducing scrutiny timelines for papers to compensate for an extended submission window.

The Election Commission, mindful of these concerns and aiming for a smooth and inclusive electoral process, granted a two-day extension. This revised schedule allows parties additional time to finalize their nominations and ensures all candidates have ample opportunity to participate.

The deadline extension marks a slight adjustment to the overall election schedule, which remains largely unchanged. Polling is still scheduled for February 8th, 2024.

With the nomination deadline now extended, political parties can focus on finalizing their candidates and campaigning strategies. This development is expected to inject further momentum into the already vibrant pre-election atmosphere in Pakistan.
