Former Cricketer Khalid Latif to Enter Politics on TLP Ticket
KARACHI, Pakistan: Former Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif is set to embark on a new innings, this time in the world of politics. The 38-year-old has announced his intention to contest the upcoming provincial assembly elections from Malir on the ticket of Tehreek-e-Labik Pakistan (TLP).
Latif, known for his aggressive batting style during his international cricket career, expressed his desire to serve the people of Malir, citing the area's deteriorating conditions and dwindling cricket facilities. "Cricketers are role models," he stated in a recent interview, "and they should work for the people." He lamented the decline of Malir from a "cricket nursery" to its current state.
The announcement generated buzz not only for Latif's foray into politics but also for his choice of party. TLP, often perceived as a religious outfit, is rarely associated with sports personalities. However, Latif challenged this perception, emphasizing the party's readiness for elections and its commitment to establishing a religious system in the country, something he endorses.
Latif's cricketing career saw him represent Pakistan in over 50 ODIs and 13 T20Is. He has also been a prominent figure in domestic cricket, featuring in the Pakistan Super League for Islamabad United and the National One Day Cup for Karachi Dolphins.
His entry into politics adds another dimension to Pakistan's already vibrant political landscape, particularly in Malir, where he hopes to leverage his popularity and local connections to secure a seat in the provincial assembly. Whether he succeeds in translating his cricketing prowess into political victory remains to be seen, but his decision to contest the elections has undoubtedly generated intrigue and anticipation.
