Former PM Imran Khan to Face Indictment in ECP Contempt Case
Islamabad, A crucial development has emerged in the ongoing contempt case against former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ex-Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled a hearing for January 3rd, 2024, to begin the indictment process against Khan, marking a significant escalation in the legal battle.
The hearing will take place within the confines of Adiala Jail, where Khan is currently incarcerated. This unusual location was chosen following logistical challenges in bringing Khan before the Commission due to security concerns. Notably, Fawad Chaudhry, also facing similar charges, has actively requested an open trial outside the jail, which the ECP will likely address during the upcoming hearing.
Member Election Commission Nisar Durrani will preside over the proceedings, joined by Election Commission members Shah Mehmood Jatoi, Babar Hassan Bharwana, and Justice (retired) Ikramullah. The Commission's cause list revealed this development, sparking anticipation among political circles and the wider public.
The allegations against Khan and Chaudhry stem from accusations of using "intemperate" language against the Chief Election Commissioner and the ECP itself. This incident occurred during their public criticism of the Commission's decisions regarding the recent general elections.
Should Khan be formally indicted, the case could potentially affect his political future, raising questions about his eligibility to contest future elections. The upcoming hearing, therefore, carries significant weight, and its outcome will be closely watched by all stakeholders.
