Govt forms committee to probe May 9 unrest, summons Imran Khan

Islamabad, The caretaker government of Pakistan has formed a special Cabinet Committee to probe in the events of May 9th, 2023, which saw violent protests erupt after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan,

Headed by the caretaker Law Minister, the four-member committee includes the Interior Minister, Information Minister, and Human Rights Minister. Their mission is to dissect the causes and consequences of the May 9th chaos, identifying key figures involved, and assigning responsibility. The committee will analyze potential instigators, planners, and facilitators, striving to prevent such upheavals from repeating. Their findings are expected to be presented to the cabinet within two weeks.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been summoned to appear before an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi on January 9th. He faces multiple charges related to the May 9th incidents, including alleged involvement in the attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ), burning official images, and inciting violence.

Addressing these developments, Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi stressed that the interim government's primary focus is ensuring free and fair elections, which cannot be delayed. He reiterated the gravity of the May 9th events, stating that "ample evidence" exists against those responsible. Solangi also encouraged anyone with concerns about the upcoming elections to raise them through established legal channels.

The formation of the investigative committee and Khan's upcoming court appearance mark crucial steps in addressing the aftermath of the May 9th turmoil.
