Govt to implement firewall for social media control with service providers’ help

ISLAMABAD: The government has announced plans to deploy a sophisticated firewall with the cooperation of internet service providers in a move aimed at regulating social media. This firewall, equipped with deep packet inspection capability, is set to revolutionize online content management by delving into data up to Layer 7 and filtering social media content.
Sources reveal that the firewall will possess advanced features, allowing it to pinpoint propagation points on social platforms and block data at the IP level, rather than merely at the application level. This comprehensive approach is expected to enhance the government's ability to regulate online content effectively.
Under the arrangement, internet service providers will bear the cost of installing the firewall, with some financial support provided by the government. The decision comes amidst assurances from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) that internet service providers must uphold their obligation to curtail illegal content as stipulated in their licensing agreements.
While the PTA emphasizes the importance of enforcing regulations, the Ministry of Information Technology maintains that the installation of the firewall falls within the jurisdiction of the PTA, highlighting the collaborative efforts to ensure enhanced oversight of online platforms.
