IMF to approve staff-level agreement with Pakistan soon, Says Finance Minister
ISLAMABAD, Aug 06: Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board is expected to approve the staff-level agreement with Pakistan by the end of this month.
Speaking at an event in Islamabad, Aurangzeb highlighted that Pakistan is one of the countries severely affected by climate change. He stated that following the IMF approval, discussions on climate financing will commence with both the IMF and the World Bank during their annual meetings. These talks aim to address the urgent need for financial support to combat climate change effects.
Aurangzeb also emphasized the pressing issue of population growth in Pakistan, describing it as a "population bomb" that has exploded. He stressed the necessity of controlling population growth while simultaneously mitigating climate change impacts. He called for effective plans to secure financing for these changes.
The Finance Minister noted that the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Climate Change are collaborating with the IMF and the World Bank to improve Pakistan’s economic situation. He underscored the importance of enhancing the budget, tax measures, energy sector, and overall quality of life. Additionally, he highlighted the need for improved monitoring of climate change projects in partnership with the IMF and the World Bank.
Aurangzeb also called on the private sector to play a pivotal role in boosting the country's economy. He stressed that significant policies based on climate change must be implemented to shield the nation from its adverse effects.
