India Shuts Airspace to Pakistan Until May 23 Amid Rising Tensions

In response to escalating political and military tensions, India has officially closed its airspace to all Pakistani aircrafts until May 23, 2025. The restriction, confirmed through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), prohibits Pakistani flights from using Indian airspace during this period.
Impact on Air Traffic
The airspace ban primarily affects Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which operates a flight route to Kuala Lumpur that passes through Indian airspace. However, given that other international routes from Pakistan do not typically transit through India, the overall impact on Pakistan’s airline industry is expected to be relatively limited compared to that on India.
In anticipation of potential disruptions, PIA had already suspended its flights over Indian territory. This proactive measure was taken to avoid possible risks resulting from the rising hostilities between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Escalating Diplomatic Tensions
This airspace closure follows a series of recent diplomatic and military actions between India and Pakistan. Just before the airspace restriction, India had suspended its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty, citing the Pahalgam attack as the justification. Pakistan responded swiftly, barring Indian airlines from its airspace, which further deepened the rift between the two countries.
Challenges for Indian Airlines
The closure of Pakistani airspace has now begun to affect Indian carriers as well, forcing them to reroute flights or delay services, especially those headed westward. These operational disruptions come at a time when both countries are dealing with heightened military tensions, complicating air travel across the region.
As the situation continues to develop, experts anticipate further disruptions in air traffic, particularly for airlines operating between South Asia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
The ongoing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan have caused significant disruptions in air travel, with the closure of Indian airspace being one of the latest developments in the strained relationship. As the deadline for the airspace ban nears, it remains uncertain whether the two nations will take any steps to de-escalate the situation or if the tensions will continue to intensify.
