Karachi Court Penalizes Acid Attacker with 14-Year Sentence

KARACHI: In a landmark decision, an Additional District and Sessions Judge in Karachi has sentenced Kausar Abbas to 14 years of hard labor for throwing acid on his wife, Saima. Judge Muhammad Ilyas Memon also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Abbas, to be paid as compensation to the victim. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 6 months imprisonment.
The verdict comes after Saima bravely testified against her husband, detailing a history of domestic abuse fueled by his drug addiction. According to Public Prosecutor Kabra Syed, Saima recounted how Abbas repeatedly demanded money from her. When she refused, he attacked her with acid, causing severe burns and injuries.
This sentence sends a strong message that acid attacks will not be tolerated. It offers a beacon of hope for survivors and demonstrates the judiciary's commitment to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens.
