LHC remarks Lahore's Water Supply at Risk by 2026 due to climate impacts
Lahore, Jan 26: The Lahore High Court voiced concerns over the visible impact of climate change, highlighting the absence of snowfall as evidence during a hearing on petitions addressing the smog issue.
Justice Shahid Karim presided over the hearing, stating that the current scenario raises questions about the severity of climate change. Reports suggest that Lahore may face a water shortage by 2026, necessitating reliance on water tankers.
During the hearing on Friday, a representative from the Judicial Commission inquired about the installation of tube wells and the availability of Vasa water in those areas. Justice Shahid Karim suggested the initiation of electronic vehicle projects by semi-government organizations. The Judicial Commission proposed that private schools should offer free transportation to 50% of students, a suggestion endorsed by the judge who emphasized the financial capacity of private schools.
An advocate from the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) informed the court about recent afforestation efforts, stating that 5 thousand saplings were recently planted in Shahdara, with plans for an additional 2 thousand. The PHA has also provided 25 electric bikes to its staff. The court was updated by the spokesperson of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on climate-related issues, assuring that rain is expected to commence by the following Friday.
However, the PDMA representative acknowledged that palm tree planting on highways should be banned, emphasizing that it contributes to climate change. The court directed an investigation into underpasses built on the canal, with the Judicial Commission expressing dissatisfaction, stating that the underpasses have worsened over time.
