LPG Prices soar amidst Pakistan-Iran tension, consumers bear the brunt
LAHORE, Jan 19: The LPG mafia has hiked the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 10 rupees per kg, citing the ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Iran. This abrupt increase has led to a surge in the cost of household cylinders by 120 rupees and commercial cylinders by 450 rupees.
Irfan Khokhar, Chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, revealed that despite the official price set at Rs 256 by Ogra for this month, LPG is being sold at a staggering Rs 320 to 330 per kg in the open market. Khokhar expressed frustration, asserting that no organization, including Ogra, is taking decisive action against those responsible for selling LPG at exorbitant rates, leading to the exploitation of consumers.
He emphasized that the lack of accountability for the LPG mafia and marketing companies has allowed them to flout official prices, impacting consumers adversely. Questioning the practicality of buying LPG at Rs 300 to Rs 310 and selling it at a lower price, Khokhar called for the authorities to hold companies accountable for their role in the price surge.
Despite Ogra and the police targeting street vendors, Khokhar highlighted the need for equal measures against the companies profiting from the sale of expensive LPG, earning millions of rupees daily.
