New Rawalpindi Commissioner Denies Rigging, Demands Inquiry

Islamabad: Saif Anwar Jappa, the newly appointed Rawalpindi Commissioner, held a press conference to refute former Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatta's accusations of election irregularities in the region. He stressed that Chatta's role was limited to coordination and denied any connection to influencing results. Jappa called for an independent investigation into the allegations.

Supporting Jappa, District Returning Officers (DROs) from nearby districts and local officials unanimously denied experiencing pressure or witnessing irregularities during the elections. They maintained transparency and fairness throughout the process.

These statements directly contradict Chatta's dramatic claims yesterday, where he admitted to manipulating results in favor of losing candidates across 13 constituencies and called for the resignation of high-ranking officials, including the Chief Justice. He even surrendered himself to the police, requesting the death penalty.

Amidst these contradicting claims, the Election Commission has formed a high-level committee to investigate the allegations. Led by a senior member, the committee will record statements from involved officials and submit its report within three days. This report will guide further actions, including potential legal proceedings against Chatta.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa dismissed Chatta's accusations against him, highlighting the need for evidence to substantiate claims. He emphasized that making accusations without proof is not justified.

The situation remains complex, with conflicting narratives and an ongoing investigation. The committee's report and potential legal actions are expected to provide further clarity on the matter.
