Pakistan, India Exchange Prisoner Lists, Urging Release of Completed Sentences

Islamabad, In a routine exchange mandated by a 2008 agreement, Pakistan and India have shared lists of their respective citizens imprisoned in each other's jails. As of January 1st, 2024, the lists revealed that

231 Indian citizens imprisoned in Pakistan, this figure breaks down into 184 fishermen and 47 civilians.
418 Pakistani citizens imprisoned in India, among them are 81 fishermen and 337 civilians.

Both countries regularly carry out this prisoner list exchange on January 1st and July 1st every year. However, the issue of imprisoned individuals, particularly fishermen often caught unintentionally crossing maritime borders, remains a sensitive matter in bilateral relations.

Pakistan has urged India to expedite the release of Pakistani prisoners, especially those who have completed their sentences. This call reflects long-standing concerns about the length of detentions and the plight of separated families.
