Pakistan, Sri Lanka agree on repatriation of 43 pakistani prisoners
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Sri Lanka have agreed to repatriate 43 Pakistani citizens currently imprisoned in Sri Lankan jails. The decision comes after a meeting on Friday between Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Sri Lankan High Commissioner Admiral (Retd) Ravindra Chandrasiri Wijegunaratne.
The meeting, also attended by senior officials from both sides, focused on facilitating the immediate return of the Pakistani prisoners. Sri Lankan High Commissioner pledged Sri Lanka's cooperation in ensuring a smooth repatriation process.
"Arrangements for the return of Pakistani prisoners will be finalized within the next few days," said Interior Minister Naqvi. "The Ministry of Interior has been working diligently with Sri Lankan authorities for the past month to bring these prisoners home."
The high-level meeting also explored avenues for enhanced collaboration in security and counter-narcotics efforts.
Beyond prisoner repatriation, both nations expressed a strong commitment to strengthening bilateral relations across various sectors. Minister Naqvi emphasized Pakistan's desire to expand trade ties with Sri Lanka, aiming to significantly boost commerce in the coming years.
"Pakistan and Sri Lanka share a strong foundation built over seven decades," said Minister Naqvi. "We are committed to further developing our relationship in trade, education, culture, and other areas, guided by the shared vision of our leadership."
This agreement marks a positive step forward for Pakistan and Sri Lanka, fostering cooperation on multiple fronts and facilitating the return of Pakistani citizens to their home country.
