Pakistanis Face Potential Hike in Electricity Prices
Pakistan's power woes are set to worsen as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested an increase in electricity prices by Rs 5 per unit. This hike, if approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on March 28th, would translate to an additional burden of Rs 40 billion on consumers.
The CPPA cites fuel cost adjustments for February as the reason behind the proposed increase. Their application details the energy mix used to generate electricity during that month, with significant portions coming from imported LNG (20.33%) and nuclear power (23.29%).
This potential price hike comes amidst separate requests from the country's two major gas suppliers, Sui Northern and Sui Southern, for a price increase exceeding 100%. These developments paint a concerning picture for Pakistani consumers who might face a double whammy of rising electricity and gas costs.
