Pakistan's Passport Ban for Asylum Seekers challenged in SCP
ISLAMABAD, A controversial government notification banning the issuance of passports to asylum seekers abroad has been challenged in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Advocate Saim Chaudhry filed the petition under Section 184(3), making the Federal Government and the Director General of Passports parties to the case. The petition demands the June 5 government policy be declared null and void, calling for an immediate halt to its implementation.
The petition argues that the government's decision not to issue passports to asylum seekers lacks justification and violates fundamental rights, deeming the notification discriminatory. It contends that the ban contravenes Articles 10, 10A, and 25 of the Constitution.
On June 11, the Federal Ministry of Interior announced the decision, prompting legal action from affected parties and human rights advocates. The Supreme Court's ruling on this petition could have significant implications for the rights of Pakistani asylum seekers abroad
