Pakistan's Senate Approves Resolution to Postpone February Elections
ISLAMABAD - The Senate of Pakistan has passed a resolution urging the Election Commission to postpone the upcoming general elections, originally scheduled for February 8th. The resolution, presented by Senator Dilawar Khan, cites concerns over harsh weather conditions in some areas and potential security threats as reasons for the delay.
The resolution faced opposition from several senators, including Afnanullah Khan of the PML-N party, who argued that security concerns have been present in past elections and should not be used as an excuse for postponement. He further expressed concerns about the potential for indefinitely delaying the elections.
Senators from the JUI-F and PPP parties also raised objections, highlighting the importance of upholding the democratic process and adhering to the established election schedule. However, supporters of the resolution, including Senator Babar Awan, emphasized the need to ensure fair and safe elections for all citizens, particularly in areas experiencing severe weather or security risks.
Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani approved the resolution after a vote, while acknowledging the differing opinions among senators. It remains to be seen whether the Election Commission will act upon the Senate's recommendation and officially postpone the elections.
