Pakistan's Supreme Court Intervenes in Level Playing Field Concerns for PTI Candidates
Islamabad, The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday directed the government, police authorities, and the Election Commission to address concerns raised by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party regarding harassment of its candidates and unequal treatment in the upcoming elections.
The hearing centered on PTI's plea for a level playing field during the election campaign. Justice Athar Manullah, presiding over the bench, expressed concern over reports of PTI candidates facing obstacles while submitting nomination papers and alleged biased treatment by law enforcement agencies.
The court noted that despite the announced election schedule, PTI candidates were reportedly being hindered from participating fully. In light of these concerns, the Supreme Court issued several key directives:
The Election Commission was instructed to meet with representatives of political parties, including PTI, to hear and resolve any outstanding complaints regarding candidate harassment or procedural issues.
All Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs) across Pakistan were directed to ensure fair treatment of all candidates and prevent harassment of PTI members. Concerns were raised about lawyers associated with PTI being arrested from returning officers' offices, and the court emphasized the need for police to remain neutral in the electoral process.
The judges encouraged direct communication and resolution between PTI leadership and the Election Commission to address any lingering concerns about fairness and the electoral playing field.
It is important to note that Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa is currently on vacation, and the hearing was presided over by an acting bench. Nevertheless, the Supreme Court's intervention and directives underscore the importance of ensuring transparent and impartial elections in Pakistan.
