PM announces to privatize power generation companies to curb electricity theft

ISLAMABAD, Mar 29: The Pakistani government, led by Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, has announced plans to privatize the country's power generation companies as part of efforts to combat electricity theft and alleviate the burden on the national economy.

According to media reports, the decision follows a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, where he stressed the need for a stable electricity system and the detrimental effects of electricity theft on the economy. Prime Minister Sharif directed strict action against those involved in electricity theft and emphasized the importance of reducing line losses and upgrading transmission lines.

The decision to privatize power generation companies aims to relieve pressure on the public exchequer. It comes as the government reviews the progress of the anti-electricity theft campaign launched in September 2023, which has led to a decrease in theft rates and a recovery of Rs. 57 billion.

Data presented at the meeting showed a correlation between reduced electricity theft and decreased load shedding in affected areas. The government also strengthened its legal framework to address electricity theft, resulting in over 50,000 arrests nationwide.

The campaign also targeted internal inefficiencies within power distribution companies, leading to the suspension of over 350 officials. Incentive programs are proposed to encourage continued vigilance at the divisional and district levels.

Key government officials, including federal ministers and high-ranking officials, attended the review meeting. The decision to privatize power generation companies reflects the government's commitment to tackling electricity theft and improving the financial health of the power sector. Success will depend on careful planning, transparent execution, and ongoing efforts to combat electricity theft.
