PM Shehbaz Holds Productive Talks on Trade, Security with MBS in Saudi Arabia

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, currently on an official four-day visit to Saudi Arabia, has engaged in high-level talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). The discussions, held on March 20, 2025, focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, particularly in the areas of trade, security, military cooperation, and investment.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During the meeting, attended by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, both leaders emphasized the need to further promote military cooperation. The talks were seen as a crucial step toward enhancing defense ties between the two countries, which have long maintained a strategic partnership.

In a post-meeting statement, PM Shehbaz shared his satisfaction with the productive discussions. He expressed optimism about the growing cooperation between the two nations, saying, “We had a most productive discussion on ways to further strengthen Pakistan-Saudi Arabia ties in trade, investment, energy & security.” The Prime Minister also praised Saudi Arabia’s commitment to increasing investment in key sectors in Pakistan, a sentiment echoed by the Crown Prince.

Focus on Economic Growth

Both leaders highlighted the significance of boosting economic ties. PM Shehbaz expressed his appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s role in supporting Pakistan’s economic development and its commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial economic partnership. He noted, “Our enduring friendship and shared vision for prosperity are taking our bilateral relations to new heights.”

Welfare of the Pakistani Community

In addition to economic and security matters, the leaders also discussed the welfare of the Pakistani community residing in Saudi Arabia. MBS acknowledged the important contributions of Pakistanis to Saudi Arabia’s development and emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties, as well as increasing cultural and educational exchanges between the two nations.

Further Cooperation and Future Plans

PM Shehbaz’s visit is part of a broader effort to solidify Pakistan’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. This visit comes after a successful trip in October 2024, where both countries signed several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to enhance trade and investment, valued at over $2 billion. Additionally, the Premier plans to visit Makkah, Madina, and Jeddah during his stay, furthering diplomatic and cultural engagements.

The ongoing visit underscores the strong, multifaceted relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, with both nations committed to strengthening ties in various sectors, ensuring a prosperous future for both countries.
