Prime Minister Forms Committee to Reduce Government Expenditure

Islamabad - In a move aimed at streamlining government operations, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the formation of a seven-member committee tasked with proposing institutional reforms and reducing the size of the federal government.

The committee will be chaired by the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. Other members include the Secretary of the Cabinet Division, the Secretary of the Finance Division, Secretary I&P Rashid Mahmood Langriyal, Dr. Qaiser Bengali, Dr. Farrukh Saleem, and Dr. Muhammad Naveed Iftikhar.

The committee's primary objective is to identify areas for reform within government institutions and recommend measures to reduce the overall size of the federal bureaucracy. This will contribute to decreased government expenditure.

The committee's mandate extends beyond identifying areas for downsizing. They will also review the National Fiscal Efficiency Report prepared by the Finance Division and explore additional avenues for cost-saving, such as proposing alternative pension schemes or optimizing the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP).

The committee is empowered to seek assistance from experts in both the public and private sectors, should they deem it necessary. Their findings and recommendations will be presented to the Prime Minister in a report within a week.

This initiative by the Prime Minister reflects a commitment to fiscal responsibility and a more efficient government apparatus.
