Punjab govt decides special Court Martials for corrupt police officers
LAHORE, April 14: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the establishment of special courts martial to try police officers and personnel accused of corruption and criminal activity.
The decision came during a special meeting held in Murree to review the province's law and order situation. The meeting, chaired by Sharif, included high-ranking officials like the Inspector General of Punjab Police and the Chief Secretary.
This initiative signifies a strong stance against police misconduct. The special courts martial will be tasked with prosecuting officers involved in corrupt practices and those collaborating with criminals.
Additionally, the meeting addressed broader concerns about crime in Punjab. Proposals included establishing a specialized police force for each crime category and potentially implementing the death penalty for cases involving the rape of women and children.
Measures to combat organized and cybercrime were also discussed. The establishment of a special unit dedicated to tackling these issues, along with enhanced IT training for officers, received approval.
She further emphasized the importance of eradicating the illegal weapons trade within Punjab and ensuring swift punishment for offenders. She also directed authorities to equip the police force with modern weaponry, vehicles, night vision technology, and drones to enhance their effectiveness.
