Punjab implements plastic ban province-wide on World Environment Day
LAHORE, June 05: Punjab has taken a decisive step towards environmental preservation by imposing a ban on the use, production, sale, and trade of plastic across the province, effective today.
Marking World Environment Day, Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, emphasized the global challenge of environmental pollution, stressing the importance of collective action to ensure safety and sustainability.
Sharif highlighted the detrimental effects of plastic on both the environment and human health, affirming that the plastic ban policy will be rigorously enforced. Specifically, the ban extends to plastic bags in hotels, restaurants, and eateries, with a concerted awareness campaign launched to promote eco-friendly alternatives like cotton bags.
In addition to the plastic ban, Sharif advocated for reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing investment in renewable energy sources. She underscored the urgent need to address deforestation, emphasizing collective responsibility in preserving natural landscapes.
Citing alarming statistics on environmental degradation, Sharif warned of the potential consequences, urging proactive measures to safeguard future generations. She commended the Punjab government's proactive stance in environmental protection and called upon individuals to play their part in ensuring an ecological future for all.
