Punjab Launches Free Legal Aid for Indigent Prisoners Across Jails

Lahore: In a landmark initiative, the Punjab government has begun providing free legal aid to impoverished prisoners across the province.

According to the Punjab Interior Department, no prisoner in Punjab will be left without legal representation. Free Legal Aid Committees have been set up in all 43 jails, thanks to a collaboration between the Punjab Bar Council and District Bar Associations.

This new measure ensures that indigent prisoners who cannot afford legal counsel will receive necessary assistance. Eligible prisoners can apply through their respective Superintendents of Jails to be connected with assigned lawyers.

A total of 447 lawyers are now part of these Free Legal Aid Committees. They are distributed across the province as follows: 45 in Lahore Division, 90 in Gujranwala, 70 in Rawalpindi, 47 in Faisalabad, 45 in Multan, 24 in Sargodha, 55 in Bahawalpur, 55 in Sahiwal, and 16 in DG Khan.
