Punjab sets target 4 million acres of land for cotton cultivation this year
LAHORE, April 06: The Punjab government has set a goal of cultivating cotton on 4 million acres of land in 2024, aiming to boost the country's economy through increased production.
During a meeting at the Civil Secretariat, Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman was briefed by agriculture officials on the plans. The target acreage is divided amongst various regions: Bahawalpur (1,869,000 acres), Multan (945,000 acres), DG Khan (753,000 acres), Sahiwal (118,000 acres), Faisalabad (115,000 acres), and Sargodha (197,000 acres).
The Chief Secretary emphasized ensuring a steady supply of certified seeds, fertilizers, and canal water to support the cotton crop's success. He directed the Agriculture Department to provide farmers with all necessary resources and guidance throughout the sowing process.
"The agriculture sector is the backbone of our economy," stated the Chief Secretary. "Achieving this cotton production target has the potential to significantly increase our foreign exchange earnings."
Zaman issued specific instructions to the Commissioners of Bahawalpur, Multan, and DG Khan divisions, emphasizing close monitoring of the cotton crop's cultivation.
The meeting also included a detailed briefing by the Agriculture Secretary. He highlighted a campaign launched in Multan specifically targeting cotton cultivation, aiming to cultivate 700,000 acres in the region. The Secretary emphasized the potential of using innovative techniques like Agiti cultivation methods to improve cotton yields.
To ensure successful achievement of the targets, committees have been established at provincial, divisional, and district levels. The Agriculture Department will leverage land information and management systems to provide targeted advisory services to farmers in cotton-growing regions.
The meeting included participation from Secretaries of Irrigation and Finance Departments alongside Agriculture Department officials. Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners from Bahawalpur, Multan, DG Khan, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, and Sargodha joined virtually.
