Sindh High Court Criticizes Police for Ineffective Investigations and Corruption

Karachi: Justice Amjad Ali Sohto of the Sindh High Court has harshly criticized the Karachi police for their failure to effectively investigate crimes and apprehend suspects, accusing them of being more focused on collecting bribes from individuals involved in illegal activities.

During a recent hearing concerning the police's inadequate investigations and the non-arrest of suspects, Justice Sohto expressed frustration over the systemic issues. He emphasized that beyond registering cases, the police are responsible for recovering stolen property and ensuring timely identification and arrest of suspects. Failing to follow proper procedures, he noted, often benefits the accused.

Additional IG Karachi, Javed Alam Odhu, who appeared in court as ordered, acknowledged his recent appointment and promised efforts to improve arrest rates. However, Justice Sohto criticized the police for their rising monthly expenditures despite a ban on certain practices, asserting that their focus remains on extorting money rather than addressing criminal activities.

The court questioned whether the police are releasing suspects or keeping innocent individuals incarcerated, given the ten cases currently under scrutiny. Justice Sohto has adjourned the hearing, urging the Karachi Police Chief to enhance police performance, ensure the arrest of fugitives, and improve investigative quality.
