Supreme Court Ends Contempt Proceedings Against Faisal Vawda and Mustafa Kamal
IslamabaD, June 28: The Supreme Court has accepted the unconditional apologies of Senator Faisal Vawda and Muttahida Qaumi Movement's Mustafa Kamal, bringing an end to the contempt proceedings against them. A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa heard the case, where both individuals appeared in person.
During the hearing, Mustafa Kamal's lawyer, Farogh Naseem, argued for his client's apology, emphasizing his regret expressed in a press conference. Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa queried Senator Faisal Vawda about his apology, to which Vawda confirmed he had apologized as well.
Advocate Faisal Siddiqui, representing 26 TV channels, appeared before the court but acknowledged that no written responses had been submitted by the media organizations despite their presence. Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa expressed concern over the lack of formal responses from the media, underscoring the distinction between freedom of press and freedom of expression.
The Chief Justice questioned the absence of signed responses from media representatives, highlighting the seriousness of contempt of court cases requiring direct accountability from media channels. Discussions during the proceedings also touched upon the role of media responsibility in reporting contentious issues without crossing legal boundaries.
The conclusion of the contempt proceedings marks a significant legal resolution following the apologies tendered by Faisal Vawda and Mustafa Kamal.
