Senior Jurist Aitzaz Ahsan withdraws from Bhutto Presidential Reference Case

ISLAMABAD: In a major development in the ongoing Zulfikar Ali Bhutto presidential reference hearing, senior jurist Aitzaz Ahsan has apologized and withdrawn his offer to assist the court as a judicial assistant.

The nine-member larger bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, is currently reviewing the controversial death sentence handed to former Prime Minister Bhutto in 1979.

Earlier, the court appointed nine judicial assistants to aid in the complex case. However, during the latest hearing, Aitzaz Ahsan surprised the court by expressing his regret and declining the position.

The reason behind his withdrawal remains unclear. The court has acknowledged Aitzaz Ahsan's decision and is currently evaluating its next steps regarding the appointment of additional judicial assistants.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice emphasized the finality of the Supreme Court's decision in the matter, stating that it cannot be altered.

The appointment of nine assistants has already sparked debate, with some legal experts questioning its necessity and potential impact on the case's impartiality.

With Aitzaz Ahsan's withdrawal, the court faces the challenge of finding suitable replacements and ensuring a comprehensive and fair review of the Bhutto case.
